About THE PROJECT

ARtventure is an Augmented Reality coloring book application that bridges traditional coloring with immersive digital experiences. Developed to reimagine how children and creative users engage with illustrated pages, the app uses AR to bring hand-colored artwork to life in three dimensions using region capture based live texturing. This project demonstrated expertise in AR interaction design, real-time rendering pipelines, 3D asset preparation, and the UX challenges unique to camera-based, marker-tracked experiences.

Key Accomplishments

Vuforia Engine AR Integration:

Designed and implemented a robust image target-recognition pipeline that detects coloring pages as unique markers, dynamically mapping the user's colors onto the corresponding 3D character model in real time, preserving creative ownership across the physical-to-digital transition.

UV Map Reformation & Color Sampling:

Each animal model's UV maps were restructured to align precisely with the segmented zones of the physical coloring page illustration, ensuring a direct, predictable correspondence between every colored region on paper and its counterpart surface on the 3D mesh. A real-time color-sampling system then reads dominant hues from each segment and applies them as live textures, so the digital character faithfully reflects the child's analog artwork down to individual body parts.

Rigging & Animation Pipeline:

All animal models were rigged from scratch with bone structures appropriate to each creature's anatomy, then animated with looping behavioral cycles, idle movements, walk cycles, and reaction animations, giving each character a living, personality-driven presence once brought to life through the AR view.

Child-Centered UX Design:

Crafted the entire interaction flow around a young user persona, prioritizing large tap targets, minimal onboarding friction, and delightful micro-animations to sustain engagement and reduce cognitive load for the target age group.

Spatial Anchoring & Stability:

Solved the core AR challenge of keeping 3D characters reliably anchored to physical coloring pages under varied lighting conditions and camera angles, by implementing adaptive threshold tuning and fallback anchor-recovery logic.

Challenges & Learnings

The most technically demanding aspect was integrating UV reformation, real-time color transfer, and live animation into a seamless pipeline. A key learning was redesigning UV maps to align with the coloring page’s zoning logic rather than just rendering efficiency, requiring close collaboration between illustration and 3D modeling. Another insight was that users, especially children, preferred visually enhanced, saturated colors over technically accurate reproduction, shifting the design approach from fidelity-first to experience-first for a more engaging outcome.
